Peugeot 605 —
the PRV goes 24-valve

The 605 shares with the Citroën XM the last PRVs of the PSA group: the 167-170 bhp 12-valve ZPJ, then — from 1990 — the 24-valve ZPJ4 and its ACAV variable-geometry intake, 200 bhp without any turbo, on the SV24.

Two PSA codes, one 3.0-litre

The ZPJ — SFZ in the type approval — is the 12-valve 3.0-litre with Fenix 3B injection; the ZPJ4 — SKZ — is PSA's own 24-valve, with its heads, its sequential Fenix 4 injection and its ACAV intake, of a different spirit from Renault's Z7Xs. Same code on both sides of the group: the Citroën XM gets both.

ACAV: the 24-valve revolution

ACAV — Admission à Caractéristiques Acoustiques Variables — changes the length of the intake runners with engine speed: nearly 80 % of peak torque from low revs on a naturally aspirated V6. Three configurations, driven by two solenoid valves according to revs and throttle position: at idle, the two intake half-volumes are separate, one per bank — gas speed is at its highest, the torque configuration; between 4,000 and 5,000 rpm the long-link solenoid connects them, the transition; above 5,000 rpm both solenoids are energised and the half-volumes become one, the power configuration.

Light-alloy heads with one overhead camshaft each, four valves per cylinder driven through hydraulic tappets, specific 62-link chains against 64 on the ZPJ: every detail is on the ZPJ4 file. At the 1988 Paris Motor Show, the Peugeot Oxia had shown what this 24-valve could dream of: twin-turbo by WM, 680 bhp.

The twins, the warning and the farewell

PSA's twins

The 605 and the Citroën XM share both engines, code for code — 12-valve ZPJ, 24-valve ZPJ4 — and their workshop sheets answer each other: the XM V6.24 also has Citroën Technical Note no. 23, which explains how the 24-valve and the ACAV work.

Three 24-valve road cars

The production PRV is a 12-valve from 1974 to the end of its career — Safrane Biturbo included. Only three road cars are exceptions: the 605 SV24, the XM V6 24S and the Venturi 400 GT. Among concept cars and racers, the Peugeot Oxia (680 bhp) and the Venturi 600 LM (~600 bhp).

The ES9 warning

From 1997, a 60° « PR » V6 — ES9 at Peugeot, L7X at Renault — succeeds the PRV on the 605 and XM. That engine is not a PRV: only the ZPJ and « early » ZPJ4 versions belong here.

Before the twins

The lion's previous PRVs — 504 Coupé and Cabriolet, 604, 505 — each have their file. Between them and the 605 everything changes: in 1990 the ZPJ4 inaugurates the 24-valve heads and the variable acoustic intake.

SV24
What are the workshop figures of the 605 SV 24's ZPJ4?
147 kW (200 bhp) at 6,000 rpm, 6,500 rpm limit, 26 daNm at 3,600, 9.5 compression ratio, 231 km/h, 36.91 km/h per 1,000 rpm in fifth (ME 5T gearbox). Idle 750 ± 50 rpm, not adjustable, depending on whether the air-conditioning compressor has engaged since the last start. Oil pressure 1.6 bar at 800 rpm, 4.2 at 2,500, 5.5 max at 5,500. Eyquem RFC 58 LS3 plugs, 1 ± 0.1 mm gap, 1.5 daNm torque. Capacities: 80 l, 7 l oil, 10 l coolant, 1.85 l gearbox. Pub et Trade sheet 1A90.
ACAV
At what engine speed does the ACAV intake change geometry?
Around 5,200 rpm: below that, the long runners exploit resonance to swell torque (nearly 80% from low revs); above it, the geometry opens to free top-end power.
Culasses
How are the 24-valve cylinder heads built?
Light alloy, four bearings, one overhead camshaft per head driven by a chain with a mechanically reset hydraulic tensioner. Four valves per cylinder, operated through intermediate followers by hydraulic tappets housed in the rockers. A support plate carries two rocker shafts: one for the intake, with separate rockers — six per head —, one for the exhaust, with one-piece rockers — three per head. The front head also carries the balance shaft. Citroën Technical Note no. 23, XM V6.24, page 5.
Poussoirs
Are the 24-valve centre followers all the same?
No, and the Technical Note says so in capitals: “WARNING: the centre followers are different”. Intake: 41.32 mm long. Exhaust: 40.12 mm. Just over a millimetre apart, invisible to the eye, between two parts that look alike. Citroën Technical Note no. 23, XM V6.24, page 5.
Distribution
How does the ZPJ4 timing drive differ from the ZPJ?
Specific 62-link chains, instead of 64 on the ZPJ, and a guide arrangement unique to this engine. Timing is set on the marks, at one turn plus 240°. Citroën Technical Note no. 23, XM V6.24, page 6.
24 soupapes
Is the 24-valve PRV V6 of the Peugeot 605 and Citroën XM documented?
Yes, twice over: Citroën Technical Note no. 23 explains how it works (Fenix 4 injection, ACAV variable intake), and the ZPJ4 workshop sheets give the values — on the 605 SV 24 side and on the XM V6.24 side, 200 bhp on both.
