the PRV enters Peugeot

ZM and ZMS are the first codes Peugeot gave the Douvrin V6: a carburetted 2,664 cc of 136 bhp, first generation, under the bonnets of the 504 Coupé & Cabriolet and the 604 SL — two of the very first PRV-engined cars.

Four generations at the top of the range

Peugeot fitted the Douvrin V6 to four generations of its top models: the 504 Coupé & Cabriolet and the 604 opened the ball among the very first PRV cars, the 505 and then the 605 carried it into the 1990s. Each evolution bears a new code — ZM and ZMS with a carburettor, ZMJ, ZNJ and ZN3J with injection, ZPJ in the 605 era, shared with the Citroën XM.

The ZM is the first of the line: the carburetted 2.7, 136 bhp, which the 604 SL shares with the 504 coupé and cabriolet. On the 604 it later gives way to the injected ZMJ of the Ti and STI (144 bhp), then to the GTI's 2.8 litre ZNJ (155 bhp). Peugeot codes also apply to Citroën: within PSA, the XM receives the same ZPJ as the 605.

136 bhp with a carburettor — one of the seven carburetted PRV road cars, with the Renault 30 (131 bhp), the Volvo 260 (125 bhp), the Alpine A310 (150 bhp), the Talbot Tagora (166 bhp) and the naturally-aspirated Alpine GTA (160 bhp).

The Pininfarina-designed coupé and cabriolet receive the 136 bhp ZM — among the very first PRV-engined cars.

Peugeot 604 SL →

The carburetted 604 SL: 136 bhp. The Ti and STI would move to injection (ZMJ, 144 bhp), the GTI to the 2.8 litre (ZNJ, 155 bhp).

Did Alpine, DeLorean, Lancia or Eagle have PRV engine codes of their own?
No. Every PRV V6 carries a code from one of the three partners: the Douvrin Z-codes at Renault (Z6V, Z7V, Z7U, Z7W, Z7X) and at Peugeot — shared with Citroën within PSA (ZM, ZMJ, ZNJ, ZN3J, ZPJ, ZPJ4) — and the B-codes at Volvo (B27, B28, B280). The other marques bought the engine as it was: Alpine under Renault codes (Z7U in the GTA Turbo, Z7X 744 in the A610), DeLorean under the Peugeot ZMJ (ZMJ-159 variant), Eagle and Dodge under the Z7X (711 and 715), Lancia under the ZN3J, Venturi under Z7U, Z7W and ZPJ4 units prepared by EIA.
