Père Hervé, a workshop foreman
made of artificial intelligence

He has a piston for a head, glasses, a spanner in his hand, and he answers on every page of the site and on the forum. Since this summer, PRV Concept has had a workshop foreman who does not exist: Père Hervé is an artificial intelligence. Here is what he is, what he knows, what he refuses to do, and why the association chose to say so.

A piston in glasses

His name is a pun that any French-speaking member gets by reading it aloud: “Père Hervé” sounds like “PRV”. His role is that of a workshop foreman: welcome people, point them to the right document, recall the right value, and refer them to those who know.

He lives in the bubble at the bottom of every page of the site, in the shop, and since recently on the forum, where he introduced himself.

ANIMATION — PÈRE HERVÉ LEAFING THROUGH A REPAIR MANUAL, SET IN MOTION BY ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE. THE MASCOT IS THE SITE'S OWN; THE WORKSHOP IS A COMPUTER-GENERATED IMAGE.

What he knows, and where he gets it

Père Hervé knows nothing of his own. He reads what the association has put online: the Library, every document of which has been scanned, straightened page by page and then run through OCR — from the Renault repair manuals to the “Pub et Trade” workshop data sheets, from the Citroën technical notes to the 1976 SAE paper; the forum topics, with their exact titles; the products of the shop.

When he quotes a manual, he gives the page and the folio, and his link opens the viewer directly at that page.

What he refuses to do: make things up

This is the rule that cost the most work. Without a source, he does not answer. A figure that no document carries is removed from his answer before it is even displayed. A claim that cannot be checked, a “the community recommends” with no forum thread behind it, a part attributed to the wrong engine: removed too.

He ends his technical answers with a sentence the association imposed on him: the manual is the authority, not him.

On the forum, never alone

Père Hervé reads the forum and prepares answers: in a thread where he is quoted, or in a topic left unanswered for years. But he publishes nothing himself. Every draft goes before a human of the association, who reads it, corrects it or discards it.

He sends no private messages to chat, does not reply to out-of-date classified ads, and quotes forum topics rather than paraphrasing them.

What he is not

Not a mechanic. Not a member. Not infallible. He gets things wrong, as the documents he reads get things wrong, and sometimes more. When he is wrong, the right answer is to say so in the thread: the correction benefits everyone, and the association enriches what he knows.

Why say it

We could have let him pass for a member who is a little too available. The association chose the opposite: say what he is, show where his answers come from, and keep a human between him and the forum.

A club is first of all people talking to each other. Père Hervé is there to save them time, not to take their place.
