PRV Concept

Hello all. Nick Here from the outer Minneapolis MN , USA area. I have three PRVs:
- One as originally installed in my DeLorean DMC12 with the last serial number being 0897 (and they started about 0503). Bosch Mechanical CIS K-Jet with Lambda
- '92 Eagle Premier 3.0 EFI, supposedly with about 18,000 miles mounted on an engine stand
- Another on a stand, about 130,000 miles and I'm not sure of what exactly it came from or is.

My question for any PRV experts is ... How can I tell which PRV version #3 is without tearing apart the engine? Is th Z identifier stamped somewhere?

What I thought about the 3rd engine but now suspect is wrong:
- '90's vintage engine
- 3.0L
- I thought it was a 505 engine but that conflicts with the 3.0L so there is wrong info here. Seems only 605's had 3.0L in the US

What I know for sure
- came from a Peugeot. 99% sure this is accurate
- The heads have what looks like date codes embossed on them and indicate 28 8 88 ... (1988?)
- EFI
- Throttle body is 55mm
- No control modules attached
- No mechanical distributer

My plans .... All this C19 isolation is driving a desire for an engine swap or upgrade. With the 3 engines I have some options to start with. The original DeLorean engine leaves owners wanting more.

If engine #3 is from a 605 then it must have a balance shaft under the cam cover of the front bank. The cam cover is much taller so you can't miss it.

Thanks SRDturbo. The two valve covers are identical (except one has the oil breather/filler).

All the data points are aligning and it implies it is from a 505 . It appears the 505 only came in the 2.8L version. It appears the 2.8L was available in 505's from '86 to 89. The supposed date code on the engine places it at '88.

FWIW, the 505's 2,8L throttle body is 55mm and the Eagle Premier's 3.0L throttle body is 50mm. The 505 compression ratio I saw was 10:1 and the 3.0L is 9.3:1 ... But I could be wrong. HP ... I see a variety of numbers for the 505 2.8L but in most cases they are not much different than the 3.0L. I have not chased any other differences yet.

One of my ideas is to switch the DeLorean to the 3.0L EFI engine. But I want to use the 2.8L's intake manifold which I think needs +/- 0.5" spacers to make them compatible to the 3.0L. I've heard, but have not seen any data, that the 3.0L's intake manifold is better performing than the 2.8L but unless it is a lot of difference, I'm willing to compromise. The goal is for the engine bay to look like the original engine at first glance.

If it's a 505 engine or a Volvo B280 it should look like this:

The timing case is very special with room for a balancer driven by the left camshaft, it seems that Peugeot used it but Volvo left it empty.
The ZN3J exist with 10:1 or 9.5:1 CR, the first one has 170hp with no lambda/cat and the second one has 146hp with "swirl" intake ports and lambda/cat.

My mystery engine looks substantially similar to your picture (except the engine is much messier and missing various parts).

Hard to get to the engine, or photograph it well, because of where it is stored. But I did get a couple. I'm not sure how to attach pictures from PC or I would. Looks like you have to host them somewhere and then link to them herein.

Anyway, the engine does have that bump on the end of the left camshaft, under the compressor and above the alternator. I've never noticed that on a PRV before. It also has the orange distributor albeit a bit broken with a black cover. Per your previous comment " If engine #3 is from a 605 then it must have a balance shaft under the cam cover of the front bank." ... so where am I relative to determining if it is a 2.8L/505 or a 3.0L/605? To me it still seems to be a 2.8L/505 but it sounds like it still could be a 3.0L/605 . It does not look like this 605 engine image (which I find a lot when searching 605 engines):

easier is to put a photo of your motor. we'll know quickly model .

if it look the same form left and right, it's not a 3.0 that have specific balance system (12 or 24v) in the front bank cylinders (or right depending motor implementation).
